Teacher Tips

  • Bring a few items to class produced with farmed products (feather pillow with cotton case, bag of potato chips, a pint of milk, a houseplant, etc.).  Toss a few around the classroom to get the ball rolling.

  • Show students a globe and discuss how much of the earth is covered with water (70% of earth is covered with water—98% of that water is in the oceans).

  • Experiment with salinity by instructing students to add table salt to cups of water, then sample with a spoon.  Seawater is about 3% salt—1/2 ounce of salt in one pint of tap water.  Have students sample freshwater, 1% salt and 3% salt.

  • Set up a tropical fish aquarium in your classroom.

  • Take a field trip to an aquarium store or a local aquaculture farm.  Find out what it takes to care for the fish.
