What is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture, the farming of animals and plants in water, has been practiced for centuries, beginning with the Chinese in 2,000 B.C.  There are a great diversity of species in production using a great variety of techniques.  This lesson will focus on defining aquaculture.  The activities included on this web site will enable you to introduce this topic through a variety of experiences.

Close this unit by reiterating some of the concepts your class has discussed.  Have your students try to define the word “aquaculture” on their own.  Aquaculture is the fastest growing segment of agriculture.  Your students have now been introduced to this unique form of farming.  Should they have any unanswered questions in class, please feel free to contact one of the Division of Aquaculture’s staff.
